Khan’s work challenges our assumptions about various media - how they are received and digested. Words and music, which we experience sequentially and which gain power from repetition are to an extent robbed of their function by becoming almost solid images. Existing images, such as photographs of gas holders and water towers taken by the German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, are in Khan’s work made to appear ghostly, animated with lines of energy and pulsing with life. He does this from layering multiple versions of the photograph and changes the opacity on eacher image.

John Powers creates sculptures, installations, drawings, and even maintains a blog Star Wars Modern, where he writes posts like “Pat Robertson is a Sith” and “The Urbanism of Superheroes”. In all John’s work, however, there’s a distinct sense of structure and a meticulous process that seems to be at play, a mix of machine and man. His large-scale sculptures and installations, for instance, are usually constructed from thousands of individuals pieces—sometimes polystyrene blocks, sometimes painted wood—into a tightly-formed, exactly-angled pattern or lined up all in a row like soldiers going to battle. Extremely intricate in everything he creates, John’s work brings together a perfect balance between the art movements of post-minimalism and abstract expressionism, and modern pop culture icons like Star Wars.
